Pretend you’re a kid again, barely even tall enough to wriggle yourself onto a swing set at the playground. You’re at home, peering out a window, and you see that the perfectly red carrier flag on your mailbox is raised! Oh boy! (That means there’s mail!) You run out, and peer inside on your tippiest of toes. Within the mailbox, you find an envelope. It’s wrapped up with some kraft string, tied nicely into a bow. It’s covered in stickers, is just slightly wrinkled, and the stamps are placed crooked.
You unravel the string, and carefully peel at the seal of the flaps so as not to rip it. Once you get it, you dump the contents of the parcel into your hands. Out comes some pieces of candy, a couple quarters, and a letter filled with drawings and sloppy cursive. It reads:
“Dearest darling-est (insert your name here),
I hope this letter finds you well! From now on, I’m going to be sharing with you a few things:
My illustrations, drawings and sketchbooks
Behind-the-scenes look at my work
Process photos and documentation
Miscellaneous life updates
Maybe a meal or two
Moving forward, I hope that you’ll be okay receiving these! That is how pen pals and snail mail work after all. You just never know what you’ll be getting in the mailbox!
Sincerely-est,
Lily”
You then tuck the letter into your pocket, and wonder how on earth this person got your address… Well anyway, please consider this newsletter a modern-day snail mail, and you, my friend, are my pen pal.
